Mamma Gladys Gave Many Hope — Let’s Keep It Burning
There are some people whose love is so unconditional and unwavering, that it shapes the course of lives and leaves behind a legacy that echoes far beyond their years. Mamma Gladys, the founder of Door of Hope in Port Elizabeth, was one of those people.
She was not only the heart behind Door of Hope; she was a mother, a grandmother, a mentor, and a relentless force of encouragement. Countless days after work I could go and sit with her and we share life. The good and the bad. And I have always walked out with a lot of weight lifted from my shoulders. Always. She was also a mother and grandmother to my son, and instrumental in his upbringing.
Mamma Gladys believed that encouragement was one of God’s most joyous art forms. With every warm embrace, every whispered prayer, every tough conversation, and every shared laugh, she reminded us that love is looking around and seeing a need - then stretching out a helping hand.
She soldiered on when things were hard. She served with joy regardless of circumstances. Her faith never wavered.
Door of Hope still stands as a testament to her faith and compassion. The work continues—but it needs your help. The home still struggles with basics like food, electricity, and gas for cooking. We hope her legacy will live on through those of us who were touched by her love or inspired by her story.
